Biomedical science is at the forefront of understanding health and disease. This degree explores how illnesses are caused, diagnosed, and treated, covering subjects comparable to the pre-clinical elements of a medical degree.
Students build a strong foundation in core areas such as blood science, infection, and tissue science, while gaining extensive laboratory experience in techniques including PCR, electrophoresis, ELISA, and spectrophotometry. The programme culminates in an independent research project, allowing students to specialise in a topic of their choice.
Teaching takes place in our £30 million Science Centre, one of Europe’s largest teaching laboratories, ensuring access to world-class facilities and expert guidance from academic staff and industry professionals.
Academic Requirements
In addition to the University’s standard entry criteria, applicants are expected to have:
Grades CCC at A level, or a minimum of 96 UCAS points from an equivalent Level 3 qualification (e.g. BTEC National, OCR Diploma, Advanced Diploma).
GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent).
Applicants with relevant qualifications or prior study may be considered for advanced entry, available only for September intake. For further advice, please see our advanced entry information or contact courseenquiries@londonmet.ac.uk.
Please note: Up to nine professional examination exemptions may be available upon successful completion of specific modules. It is the student’s responsibility to complete the required modules; exemptions cannot be guaranteed if the full three-year programme is not undertaken.
English Language Requirements
All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. Students requiring a Student visa (formerly Tier 4) may need to provide results from a Secure English Language Test (SELT), such as IELTS Academic, in line with the University’s standard requirements.
For students wishing to improve their English before enrolling, the University offers a Pre-sessional Academic English course, designed to build confidence and ensure the required level of proficiency is achieved.
Graduates of this programme often progress into roles within hospital and private medical laboratories, working as healthcare assistants, phlebotomists, or biomedical scientists. Alumni have secured positions with leading employers such as NHS pathology laboratories and The Doctors Laboratory.
Beyond biomedical science, career opportunities extend to management, medical research, education, and specialist laboratory work. The skills developed are also highly relevant to sectors such as public health (water, food, and disease surveillance), veterinary laboratories, blood banks, forensic science, and pharmaceutical development.
This degree also provides a strong foundation for further academic study, including MSc and PhD programmes, and offers a pathway into graduate medical studies. With additional training, it can also support entry into the emerging profession of Physician Associate.
